Some commentary points out that one really needs personal mentoring to learn Karate sparring in full. I see that a great book-mentor [like this one] can really add to live-mentoring -- AND one needs to create one's OWN WAY -- BASED on written and living mentors -- BUT eventually finding one's OWN WAY. "Amercian Freestyle Karate" does use small font and small grey-tone photos -- maybe thereby much increasing the amount of content for those who are willing to use a magnifying glass at first. This book is still a very valuable singular guide to a very balanced presentation of semi-classical Karate with ANGLES added to it by Dan Anderson -- especially from Kickboxing, other modern Karate mentors and as created by Dan Anderson. The organization and layout is very good -- with very clear and sharp ideas and explanation. The content is indeed PRIMARY -- but very well presented in necessary and sufficient detail to fine-tune the PRIMARY ideas and angles expressed. I see that this guide is so good that it can be used to cross-check other book and live mentors. My interest is semi-classical self-defense Kenpo Karate-Do -- and I value this book greatly for the excellent extra ANGLES it can inspire -- and see that it may inspire many other Kenpo, Karate and Tae Kwon Do folks -- to add new angles to their Shotokan roots +++
