Tigers are what are called apex predators, an animal who “has no natural predators and is at the top of the food chain.” The tiger has a lot going for it and is definitely an animal to watch out for ... especially if you’re a deer and she’s hungry. Her “good hearing and eyesight” are a real plus when she’s stalking a deer as are several other features like those “sharp claws.” The tiger will eat her fill, hide some for later, and “picks up the remaining piece of meat to carry back to her den.” Cubs can’t fend for themselves and depend on their mother for nourishment.Asia once teemed with tiger activity and in fact, “before 1900, about one hundred thousand tigers roamed” the terrain. Between human poaching and the destruction of their habitat, the population dwindled to near-extinction. From huge numbers down to a mere “3,200 tigers [surviving] in the wild,” is 2015 is quite alarming. Taking a look at a small thematic map in this book will show you where the tiger lives and ranges. The habitats vary, but “most live in warm areas.”This “powerful predator” is similar to the house cat, but way larger. The tiger varies from the smallish Sumatran tiger to the massive Siberian. They weigh “up to 933 pounds (423 kilograms)” and can “measure up to 13 feet (4 meters) long.” If you really think about the tiger’s size, it’s easy to see why they are an apex predator. The tiger is one cat you don’t want to meet in an alley! In this book you’ll learn about their physical characteristics, their amazing senses, how they can mount a high-speed chase, their lifestyle, habit, and you’ll learn some other fascinating facts about those tigers on the hunt! This “fierce predators in nature” series will wow the young reader! The layout pops with photographs of tigers around the world, including an action shot of one taking down a deer. There are numerous informative sidebars and captions that add to the text. For example, one sidebar discusses the interesting fact that “tigers catch only one out of every ten to twenty animals they attack.” In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, a “Tiger Fact File,” and some recommended book and website resources to explore. There are free downloadable, complementary educational resources on the publisher’s website.Age Range: 8 to 11 yearsGrade Level: 3 to 4PREDATORS:Lions on the HuntOrcas on the HuntPolar Bears on the HuntPythons on the HuntTigers on the HuntWolves on the HuntThis book courtesy of the publisher (to library).
