Professor Lendon is deeply informed about his subject. For reasons which escape me, he has become addicted to inverted sentences, examples of which could be multiplied unbearably. To cite just a few: "...in a trireme he had crossed the February Agean..."; "...on foot to Mytilene he had come...".. and so on. He can do without them, and write standard English, for a chapter or two, and then the inversions return; one longs for a stronger editor.
